Due to the federal government's slow response to the regulation of artificial intelligence, numerous state and local governments have stepped in to create their legislation. Some states have eagerly adopted AI, setting up task forces to examine its potential and ethical concerns; others exercise caution, enacting targeted regulations to prevent misuse, especially in sensitive areas like facial recognition technology. Since 2019, 29 pieces of legislation concerning the oversight of artificial intelligence's design, development, and application have been passed across 17 states.
